How to Reduce Flyaways

Tired of dealing with flyaway hairs? You’re not alone. Those pesky pieces seem to appear out of nowhere – no matter what hair type you have or what season it is! Here are some tips for taming those stray strands so they don’t detract from your style.

What Are Flyaway Hairs?

Flyaways are the pieces of hair that stick up and out, typically from the crown of your head or around the temples. They are usually either new, baby hairs that are growing in or damaged, broken strands that stand out from the healthy hair.

Why Do We Get Flyaways?

These stray hairs can be the result of:

Improper Use of Heat Styling Tools

While heat styling tools can work magic, when used improperly, these tools can wreak havoc on your hair causing it to become brittle and break off. The broken strands become annoying wisps. It’s important to speak with an experienced stylist to determine the best use of heat styling tools for your hair type. At Panico Salon, we assess our clients’ hair textures and advise them what temperature will work best for them.

Dryness

If your hair doesn’t have enough moisture, it will absorb the moisture in the air, which can result in stray strands that stand out.

Humidity

Humidity doesn’t just create frizz, it can also cause flyaways.

Static

The dry air of winter is a main cause of static in your hair, worsening flyaways. Just think of what your hair tends to look like after removing a hat or scarf.

Improper Washing

Both product and natural oil buildup can produce flyaways by preventing your hair from getting much needed moisture.

Going Too Long in Between Trims

If you don’t regularly trim your hair, you will likely get split ends, which are another cause of flyaways.

Tips to Keep Flyaways at Bay

Use the Right Products

The right products can work wonders for combatting flyaways. Moisturizing shampoos, deep conditioners, leave-in conditioners, high-end color lines, and hair masks are all great ways to boost hydration. At Panico Salon, we use top of the line brands, like Oribe and Goldwell, to help maintain your hair’s natural oil and keep hair moisturized. Using these types of products is especially important before blow outs and chemical treatments to keep your hair feeling as natural as possible.

Combat Humidity

If the weather is high in moisture, be sure to apply a product that fights humidity and frizz, which can help keep hair tamed.

Skip Traditional Towels

Pamper your hair by wrapping it in a microfiber towel or an old cotton t-shirt, which are much gentler on your hair than traditional towels.

 Gently Detangle

Don’t tug on your hair with a brush, rather gently work through any tangles with a wide-tooth comb to prevent damage. Start combing from the ends up to avoid breakage.

Use a Clarifying Shampoo

While moisturizing and humidity-fighting products are effective, you must be sure to properly remove them or they won’t be. We recommend using a clarifying shampoo once a week.

Sleep on a Silk or Satin Pillowcase

Protect your locks at night by swapping your cotton pillowcase for a silk or satin one, which allows your hair to more gently glide while you sleep.

Get a Haircut

As mentioned above, split ends can cause flyaways, so it’s important to get routine haircuts.

Dial Back the Heat

Every so often, give you hair a break from the heat. Let it air dry.

Swipe on a Dryer Sheet

Yup, that’s right – just as a dryer sheet fights static on your clothes, it also prevents static caused flyaways.
